Second Place Winner of the 1999 Flash Fiction Contest…

This story has Mystery, adventure, and a shocking ending. We loved the fact that it also had a story with a story—really two stories in one.

NEPTUNE LOOMS
By Skip Wrightson

Talbot lay in his berth staring at the blue planet, Neptune, looming in the skylight. Mars had collided with Earth.

How could this have happened? None of my equations fit the facts. The laws of celestial mechanics don’t work.

One by one, the stars in the skylight blinked out as a dark object moved across the sky toward Neptune.

Talbot’s throat tightened as he watched incredulously. God doesn’t play dice with the universe!

God chalked his cue stick and stretched it across the table. "Neptune in the side pocket," He called.
