Community Transit to hold auction in Kenmore

Community Transit will auction off 52 vans and minibuses Friday and Saturday at the James G. Murphy auction yard, 18226 68th Ave. N.E. in Kenmore.

Most of the vans were built between 1998 and 2000 and have mileage records in the 80,000 to 110,000 range. All will be sold “as is,” with no warranty.

Friday’s noon auction will be open only to nonprofit groups and will include a Dodge 15-passenger van, two Dodge 12-passenger vans and three Chevrolet eight-passenger Astro vans. To bid, a representative must bring proof of the group’s nonprofit status.

Any vehicles not sold Friday will be included in the main auction, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. At least two 15-passenger vans, at least two 12-passenger vans, 37 eight-passenger vans and five El Dorado 14-passenger minibuses will be sold.

All vehicles will be available for preview from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Buyers must provide a 25 percent deposit by the close of business on the auction day and full payment is due by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Public hearing reset for Tuesday

The Mountlake Terrace Planning Commission has rescheduled a public hearing on its transportation master plan and 2008-2013 transportation-improvement program to 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 23204 58th Ave W.

The master plan addresses vehicle traffic, sidewalks, bike routes, street standards, transit connections and future transportation projects in the city.

The City Council is scheduled to hold a Nov. 1 work session and a Nov. 5 public hearing on the two documents.

Skatepark closed for improvements

The Bothell skatepark is temporarily closed as old equipment is removed to prepare for improvements.

The redesigned park will include a 6-foot half pipe as well as steps, benches, railings and a picnic table.

The park, at 9815 N.E. 188th St., is scheduled to reopen in early November, depending on weather. Hours are 3-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends.

Opened in 2000, the skatepark is used by riders of all ages. The $128,000 project is budgeted under the city’s capital-facilities plan.

Open house set at hospital

An open house in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be held Saturday at the Providence Pavilion for Women and Children in Everett.

Information will be available on breast health and the latest breast-cancer diagnostic tools, plus there will be equipment demonstrations and a question-and-answer session with a representative of the American Cancer Society.

Tryouts set for dance team

Dance-team tryouts for the 2008 Snohomish County Explosion season will be held this weekend at Sky Valley Academy.

The Explosion is part of the International Basketball League, a professional spring league. Men and women 18 years and older with dance experience are eligible. A $20 audition fee will be collected at registration.

Warmups will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with tryouts scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interviews and finals will begin at noon Sunday.

Valley CEO named association chair

Valley General Hospital CEO Mark Judy will take over as chairman of the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) this month. Judy, who has led the Monroe hospital since 2000, will preside over the state association’s board of trustees and executive committee.

WSHA is a trade association of 97 state hospitals and takes a leadership role on issues that affect the delivery, quality and affordability of health care. It also advocates with legislators and regulators on behalf of Washington hospitals.

Judy said he was excited to take the organization’s helm as the state debates expanded health-insurance coverage for children.

An Everett Mountaineers foundation, Live Love Laugh for Youth, is accepting scholarship applications for mountaineer courses and required equipment.

Halloween festival set on Main Street

Bothell will have a Safe Halloween festival from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31, with Main Street merchants opening their doors to provide a safe, easy and candy-filled way to celebrate the traditional night of spookiness.

All activities are free unless otherwise noted. Main Street will be closed to traffic from 4:30-7:30 p.m., and traffic will be diverted around the area.

An earlier Safe Halloween celebration will be held from 4-6 p.m. the same day at Country Village, 23718 Seventh Ave. W.

The city also is preparing for a change of seasons Dec. 7, with a Winterfest celebration planned beginning with hayrides at 5:30 p.m. and a community tree lighting and Santa visit at 6:30 p.m. at the Park at Bothell Landing.

Renovated center opens Saturday

The newly renovated Carol Edwards Center in Woodinville will open with a ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the center, 17401 133rd Ave. N.E., Woodinville.

The Woodinville Community Band will play, and light refreshments will be provided by the Brittany Park Retirement Community, which is next door to the center.

After the reception, guests are invited to stay for a Harvest Happening and Great Pumpkin Hunt.

The center is a former school in downtown Woodinville that has been extensively remodeled as a community-gathering point, including offices and meeting rooms. A swimming-pool area has been converted to a grand hall suitable for many functions.

Fluke donates to Camp Fire USA

The Fluke Corp. of Everett has donated $100,000 to Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council in support of its $2.7 million capital campaign to make improvements at Camp Killoqua in Stanwood.

Pete Baffaro, director of corporate contributions at Fluke, said the Everett-based company, which makes industrial tool-testing equipment, has a responsibility to support programs that enhance the lives of young people. Baffaro is on the Snohomish Camp Fire board of directors and is co-chair of the capital campaign.

Camp Fire officials said a successful fundraising effort will allow it to extend service to 12,000 youths at the camp each year.

Hoedown set to save mountain ridge

The Heybrook Hoedown, a party and dance to help save an Index mountain ridge from logging, will be held Saturday at Floral Hall in Forest Park, 802 Mukilteo Blvd.

Live music will include bluegrass, jazzy funk and Native American flutes. A silent auction will include silk designs, outdoor gear and adventure trips and various professional services.

Halloween crafts such as pumpkin painting will be offered for kids; costumes are welcome. Dinner will be catered by Urban Harvest.

Proceeds will help Friends of Heybrook Ridge purchase 95 acres of forest on a ridge bordering the town of Index to create a park with trails.
