Silvertips can’t break through
EVERETT - After eight games on the road, the Everett Silvertips came home to find a new way to lose a close game Wednesday.
The Chilliwack Bruins scored twice in a shootout to edge the Silvertips 2-1 and extend the Silvertips’ losing streak to four. It was Everett’s first time in a shootout this season and only Zach Hamill was able to score on the three shots by the Silvertips.
Jadon Potter and Nick Holden scored for Chilliwack in the tiebreaker to give the Bruins (13-7-2-0) a 3-0 record in shootouts this season.
“It’s always a tough way to lose a game in a shootout,” Everett captain Jon Harty said. “It’s part of the game now, it’s exciting for the fans, and we’re just glad it’s not the playoffs.”
The goal of the game was scored by the amazing Oscar Moeller. The deadly Swedish scorer continued his torrid streak with a back-handed, spinning goal to tie the score at 1-1 with only 3:12 left in regulation.
Moeller now has 18 goals and eight assists in his last 12 games and was the only Chilliwack player not to score in the shootout. He leads the WHL with 21 goals this season.
Chilliwack outshot the Silvertips 31-20 in regulation and overtime and then won for the third consecutive time in a shootout this season.
The Silvertips broke a scoreless tie in the third period with an odd-angle by Kyle Beach 4:22 into the third period. It was the 14th goal of the season by Beach and temporarily tied him with Moeller for second in the WHL in scoring with 33 points this season.
“It was a low-scoring, defensive kind of game and we kind of let up a little in the third period,” Harty said. “Goals are going to go in. It was a case of a good player scoring a good goal.”
The Silvertips stay home to play Kelowna on Friday.
